rise & Love family,
It is I…
As a child, my mother encouraged me to dictate how my name was pronounced. I chose Xavier [ex-Zay-Vee-yer], because I thought it sounded “illustrious”. My older sister gave me the middle name Derek — and my suspicion is that a name with the letter ‘D’ was picked so that I fit in better with she and my older brother. That naming convention was not used when our younger sister arrived on the scene. I was given our mother’s family name, but I will always be my father’s son.
I spent the first half 18 years of my life growing up in Chicago, IL. In the last 18 years I’ve lived in Iowa, Colorado, Connecticut, and Oregon. I have been fortunate, blessed, and adventurous enough to have gained so much in my life thus far: my sense of self and purpose; the ability and opportunity to develop meaningful relationships; insight into the world around me; awareness and perspective; and a bevy of wonderful experiences. Yet, I’m still on the way to being the me I want to be.
I am a Black American; a partner, co-parent, son, brother, friend, artist, athlete, entertainer, advocate, mentor, coach, and consultant. I will use my voice, my talents, and my platforms to connect with and uplift others. I can put you on game, but I still have lots of learning and growing to do as well. I’m so excited for what we’re building. Thank you for joining me on this journey. I may not know you, but I love you and I want the best for you. Until next time… Peace,
Xavier Derek Hudson [xInYaFaceDotCom].
